Moore, who previously directed Behind Enemy Lines and The Omen, dismissed working on visual effect-heavy productions such as 300 and Sin City as "boring".
"I don't like using greenscreen a lot, quite simply because it's f**king boring," he revealed to DS. "It's really boring to shoot on."
Moore admitted that the majority of his latest movie, video game adaptation Max Payne, was filmed using traditional effects methods.
"I would say we had three greenscreen sets," he said. "A lot of it was very real. We used a lot of old-fashioned matte painting techniques. Everytime you see New York, it's digital matte paintings."
The Irish filmmaker added that greenscreen work also makes life difficult for actors, saying: "They've nothing to react to, it's just not a fun way to get through your day. It's just a pain, so we went to great lengths - we shot outdoors a lot at night, it's all real snow. We were in Toronto, it was a terrible winter."
