Rex Features

Meryl Streep has signed to star in a movie adaptation of Vicki Myron's book Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World.

Based on a true story, the film follows the impact a kitten has on the town of Spencer, Iowa, when it becomes the local mascot.

Streep will portray the author, who first saw the cat when it walked into the local library where she worked through the book return slot.

Pamela Gray, who is scripting upcoming Hilary Swank movie Betty Anne Waters, will write the adaptation for New Line.
