ROTK passes $1 billion barrier
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has today become the second film in history to top $1 billion (£535m) at the international box office.

The final instalment in the trilogy ranks second only to Titanic, which managed a massive $1.8 billion (£963m) after its release in 1997.

Hopes are now that it could eventually surpass Titanic; the milestone was passed in just 10 weeks by the former compared to the 11 taken by the latter.

The figures propel the total ticket sales for the entire trilogy to $2.8 billion (£1.5 billion).
