Marcheline Bertrand died of cancer in January at the age of 55. Jolie spoke of the "elegant" woman who had taught her the right values in life, reports ITN.
The film, directed by Clint Eastwood, is set in 1920s LA and follows a woman whose son is kidnapped. Jolie said of her mother: "Her name was Marcheline, but we used to call her Marshmallow, as a joke, because she was just the softest, most gentle woman in the world. She was really sweet and was never angry - she couldn't swear to save her life.
"But when it came to her kids, she was really fierce and so this is very much her, her story. She was the woman I related to, who had that elegance and strength for knowing what was right."
The mother-of-six shed tears for her mum during an interview for US TV in March, saying: "I lost my mum too young, but it happens and I am happy she is not in pain because I love her."
