Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz has been hired to write the superhero sequel X-Men: First Class.
According to Variety, the movie will either focus on younger members of the X-Men team - Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat - all of whom have appeared in the previous three franchise instalments, or the early years of characters such as Cyclops and Beast.
Schwartz, who also masterminded The OC, reportedly declined an offer from 20th Century Fox to direct the film.
Franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner will return to steer the new movie alongside X-Men: The Last Stand writer Simon Kinberg.
Based on Marvel Comics characters, the X-Men film series has earned $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.
