Gore Verbinski has teamed up with Universal to oversee a remake of the hit Korean monster movie The Host.

The film will focus on a dysfunctional family on the run from a creature that emerges from a local river. The 2006 original grossed more than $60 million at the worldwide box office.

Commercials helmer Fredrik Bond will make his directorial debut on the remake, with Smart People's Mark Poirier writing the screenplay.

"It processes a few genres together, and visually it feels close to the stuff I've made over the last few years in commercials, the tonality of humour and the scale," Bond told Variety.

A sequel to the Korean original will begin filming next year.
