The Cold Mountain star beat the likes of Holly Hunter (Thirteen), Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April), Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) and Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog) to the title.
"I am overwhelmed," said Zellweger. "Thankyou., I would like to thank the academy for inviting me here tonight. I am honoured to be here, but I'm standing here because of so many people. It was such a privilege to go to work every day with you, Jude and Nicole, my friends."
