Peter Jackson takes Best Director

"Wow, thankyou so much to the Academy," said Jackson, collecting the award from Tom Cruise. "You're giving us an incredibly overwhelming night and I appreciate it so much. We had a wonderful cast and crew, thankyou to everyone who made my working day so enjoyable."
Digital Spy readers had tipped Jackson for the Oscar with 79% of the votes, while bookies had him as the 1/5 favourite. Sofia Coppola was a strong contender but was given some consolation by winning the 'adapted screenplay' category.
