Peter Jackson takes Best Director
Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has finally taken the Oscar for Best Director.

"Wow, thankyou so much to the Academy," said Jackson, collecting the award from Tom Cruise. "You're giving us an incredibly overwhelming night and I appreciate it so much. We had a wonderful cast and crew, thankyou to everyone who made my working day so enjoyable."

Digital Spy readers had tipped Jackson for the Oscar with 79% of the votes, while bookies had him as the 1/5 favourite. Sofia Coppola was a strong contender but was given some consolation by winning the 'adapted screenplay' category.
