Mystery US bidder buys Bond Lotus

A mystery phone bidder from the US has paid £111,500 at auction for James Bond's Lotus from The Spy Who Loved Me.

Bonhams announced last month that the white Esprit was going under the hammer at its annual motoring sale, alongside the registration number AU1 from Goldfinger.

The reserve price for the first registration issued in Nottingham in 1903, which is also the chemical symbol for gold, failed to be met. However, a spokesman for the auction house said they were thrilled that the Lotus had found a new home.

The buyer described himself as a James Bond fan and said the car, which was driven by Roger Moore in the 1977 film, would be going to Atlanta, Georgia.
