Edgar Rice Burroughs's creation will reportedly ditch his loincloth in favour of khakis for the Warner Bros project.
The plot will shift from the boy-raised-by-apes in the jungle backstory and place the character in the 1930s.
Sommers's Tarzan, which has been scripted by Stuart Beattie, will aim to strike a similar tone to the Pirates Of The Caribbean series.
Burroughs's character debuted in 1912 book Tarzan Of The Apes and has since appeared in films, animation, TV and on Broadway.
