Universal is in the process of securing the remake rights to the cult classic, which revolves around a homeless construction worker (Roddy Piper) who finds a pair of glasses which allow him to see aliens walking among humans.
The original movie, which satirised a culture in the grip of economic downturn and greed, featured a six-minute fight scene between pro wrestler Piper and actor Keith David.
Carpenter will serve as executive producer on the remake.
