The British actress plays a former Nazi concentration camp officer who has an affair with a younger man in the movie, which has been accused of trivialising the Holocaust by featuring too much sex.
However, Winslet revealed that she believes that the love scenes serve a purpose in the story. "There is a lot of nudity in the beginning but it's 100% justified," she told the New York Daily News.
"Also, the relationship is not about sex. It's about how this young man reads her beautiful stories and poetry."
