Scrooge has been named the greatest Christmas movie ever by The Times.

The 1951 adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic beat The Nightmare Before Christmas and Bad Santa to the top spot.

Scrooged, the updated version of the story starring Bill Murray, finished 15th.

"The wonderful Alastair Sim is the original Christmas ham in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in this glorious adaptation of the Dickens classic. Many Scrooges came after him, but Sim made the role his own," the newspaper said.

Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life came in at ten, while 1947 film Miracle On 34th Street was eighth and Will Ferrell's Elf landed in fifth.
