A planned remake of cult film The Crow has been revealed.

Relativity Media have begun negotiations to acquire the rights to James O'Barr's comic book story, reports Variety.

Blade director Stephen Norrington has signed up to write and direct the reinvention.

The book was first adapted for the screen by Alex Proyas in 1994 but Norrington has already told fans that his vision will be different.

"Whereas Proyas’s original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," he said.

The story follows murdered rock musician Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to avenge his and his girlfriend's deaths.

The original film is primarily remembered for the tragic death of star Brandon Lee, who was shot by a blank bullet during filming.
