Hollywood stars oppose strike vote

More than 130 Hollywood stars have called on the Screen Actors Guild to abandon plans for a strike vote.
Tom Hanks, George Clooney and Charlize Theron were among the actors who signed a petition urging the industry's biggest union to reconsider its position.
"We support our union and we support the issues we’re fighting for," read the document. "But we do not believe in all good conscience that now is the time to be putting people out of work."
SAG is hoping that a strike could improve their bargaining power with the studios, after negotiations for a new contract stalled in July.
However, the proposed strike has caused a split among the 120,000 union members, with some stars like Mel Gibson and Martin Sheen publicly backing the plans.
The guild needs 75% of members to support the vote when it is taken in January. If successful, it could have an impact on the February 22 Oscars ceremony.
The industry is still recovering from last year's writers' strike, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 Golden Globes Awards.
