Scott Derrickson's remake of the 1951 classic topples DreamWorks' Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which falls to second.
Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser's fantasy movie Inkheart debuts at four, while romantic musical Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi charts at five.
