According to Latino Review, the Oscar-winning director "flipped" when he read J. Michael Straczynski's script for the sci-fi project.
The 1956 original centred on a ship that travels to the planet Altair 4 in an attempt to find out what happened to a craft that was lost there on an earlier expedition. Straczynski's script is a prequel, detailing what became of the first ship, named the Bellerophon.
Straczynski has written the new Forbidden Planet as the first part in a three-movie franchise.
Cameron had been involved with a Forbidden Planet reinvention some years ago. David Twohy is currently attached to the remake.
