Cruise had to wait outside to hear whether the 16-year-old got a part as the son of Will Smith's character.
"He went and auditioned, and Will and I were standing in the audition room, and the director said: 'Get out'," recalled Cruise.
"We were standing in the waiting room, like nervous parents, waiting to see if he got it or not. And he got it."
The Valkyrie actor added that he and Smith have a similar approach to rearing their children, saying: "I want Connor to earn [his career]. And that's how Will is with his kids."
