Earlier this month, the film's writer John August stated that the Captain Marvel project was "dead", but admitted that "it may come back in another incarnation, with another writer".
Speaking to Collider, Johnson confirmed that the movie was still awaiting a draft script and insisted that the project was "doing good".
"I'm not too sure where that is right now [because] I haven't had the opportunity to speak with [director] Pete [Segal] about that in some time in a couple of months," he said.
"Much like a lot of material in Hollywood, it will go round and round and I'm sure it will find its way back to us. And I'm sure one day if it all fits perfectly, then we'll do [it]."
The star admitted that he "loved the idea of playing" the evil Black Adam, adding: "I was very excited about that."
Shazam! tells the story of teenager Billy Batson, who is selected by the wizard Shazam to have powers that can help save the Earth.
