Roland Emmerich's sci-fi blockbuster 2012 has been pushed back from July to November.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony distribution president Rory Bruer revealed that the studio hoped to capitalise on the lucrative Thanksgiving season.

"We've had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year," he said. "We've got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that."

It will now open in the UK on November 13, facing competition from Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the Fox comedy Tooth Fairy.

2012, which stars John Cusack, centres upon a Mayan prophecy that the world will be destroyed in 2012.
