Best supporting actor was awarded to the late Heath Ledger for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight with Penélope Cruz winning the best supporting actress gong for her part in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Man On A Wire was recognised as the outstanding British film, and the best original screenplay went to Martin McDonagh for dark comedy In Bruges.
An outstanding contribution to cinema award was given to Pinewood and Shepperton Studios, director Terry Gilliam became an academy fellow, and Noel Clarke picked up the Orange Rising Star Award voted for by the public.
Despite its 11 nominations, David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won only three technical awards, for best hair and makeup, best visual effects and best production design.
