Marvel has been courting the Wrestler actor for the role of villain Crimson Dynamo. However, its paycheque of $250,000 (£181,000) appears to have dissuaded Rourke from making a deal.
"Right now, we're not doing Iron Man 2," he told New York Magazine.
Rourke is not the first star to drop out of the Iron Man franchise. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury character will not be returning and Don Cheadle has replaced Terrence Howard in the role of Jim Rhodes. The exits are rumoured to be down to financial reasons.
