The unconventional film, named Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll after one of the band's biggest hits, will star Lord Of The Rings actor Andy Serkis in the title role.
It will be produced by Damian Jones, who worked on Kidulthood and Adulthood, with The Blockheads recording music for the soundtrack.
Discussing the role last month, Serkis said that Dury "pre-empted the Sex Pistols and the whole punk movement".
