The Tribeca Film Festival will be reduced in size this year because of the ongoing economic recession.

Last year's event boasted 120 feature films, while this year's festival will show only 86. The number of sponsors and cinemas has also been reduced.

Executive director Nancy Schafer said: "With the current economic climate we had to look closely at our expenses for this year's festival."

As previously announced, the festival will be opened by Whatever Works, Woody Allen's first US-based movie for five years.

This year's event will run from April 22 to May 3.
