The I, Robot director told MTV that his 1998 sci-fi movie's success on DVD and Blu-ray has prompted talk of a sequel.
"There have been some discussions fairly recently," Proyas said. "It's had this shelf life and just lately it's done well enough that there have been some discussions about a sequel."
Dark City centred on John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), a man who discovers that he is living in a world manufactured by a sinister group called The Strangers. Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly and William Hurt were also among the cast.
"I always thought it would be intriguing to have Rufus [Sewell], who was the hero in the first one, be the bad guy," Proyas said of a potential Dark City 2 storyline. "He should turn nasty because he's got unlimited power. That's something I’d like to explore."
Proyas's next film, Knowing, is released in the UK on March 25.
