According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sex And The City writer and executive producer Jenny Bicks is penning the script.
The movie will follow the story of Mother Nature's first return to planet Earth since its creation.
"I've always wanted to control the weather," joked DeGeneres. "Nothing will stop me from doing this...neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet...I may be thinking of the postal service - but I'm really excited about the movie."
DeGeneres hasn't appeared in a live-action film since 1999's The Love Letter. She is also currently working on Warner Bros. animated feature Dog Show.
