Speaking to DS, the Australian director admitted that fan enthusiasm, coupled with his own love for the 1998 sci-fi film, prompted him to come up with ideas for a new project.
He said: "Dark City didn't set the box office on fire when it came out, but it's had a huge following over the years and built into something quite significant, and in fact the fan following of the movie made the Director's Cut possible because everyone got behind it and showed that there was a big market for it. The Director's Cut came out and in its first week it knocked Batman Begins off the DVD chart.
"There have been discussions recently about maybe doing a sequel. Having done the Director's Cut recently and gone back into that world, I really love that place. I wouldn't mind going back there. I think there's another story that can be told, that would elaborate that mythology in a really cool way. I haven't written a script and maybe I never will, but it is something that I am thinking about and jotting down the odd note here and there at the moment."
Dark City centred on John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), a man who discovers that he is living in a world manufactured by a sinister group called The Strangers. Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly and William Hurt were also among the cast.
