Dunst - Mary-Jane Watson in the action movie series - apparently told Day After Tomorrow star Gyllenhaal the news a fortnight ago, leaving him "devastated."
"Kirsten and Jake had been spending a lot of time apart because they both had filming commitments," a source told the newspaper. "But Jake was totally besotted with her and is devastated that she has broken up with him.
"Kirsten’s career has sky rocketed. She’s one of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood right now. She is determined to prove herself as a serious actress and get rid of the child actor tag she got for being a young star.
"Kirsten felt her relationship with Jake was emotionally draining and she couldn’t cope with it on top of her work. Its very sad for Jake. He is really heartbroken."
The pair had been dating since last year after being introduced by Gyllenhaal's actor sister Maggie.
