The project is based on the obscenity trial surrounding Allen Ginsberg's famed poem. Hamm will play defence attorney Jake Ehrlich, who was the inspiration for TV crime drama Perry Mason.
James Franco, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn and Jeff Daniels are also signed up for the cast.
Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman scripted the project and will direct.
