The Slumdog Millionaire star will start shooting for the film in Israel and the Palestinian territories next month, Variety reports.
Miral is based on the novel by Palestinian-Italian writer Rula Jebreal that documents the real-life story of Hind Husseini.
Husseini established the Dar Al-Tifi orphanage in Jerusalem following the partition of Palestine and creation of the state of Israel in 1948.
The lead role will be played by Palestinian actress Hiam Abbas, with the movie scheduled for release in 2010.
Schnabel directed the Oscar-nominated The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and also worked with Lou Reed on his Berlin concerts.
