The project, derived from a much-hyped script by Aaron Guzikowski, centres on a Bible-reading carpenter (Wahlberg) who takes the law into his own hands when his six-year-old daughter and her friend are kidnapped.
Bale has reportedly attached himself to the role of a cop who clashes with Wahlberg's religious man.
Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) is eyeing the project - described as a cross between Se7en and The Silence Of The Lambs - for his next directorial effort.
