Martin Scorsese is to receive an honour from the Motion Picture Association of America.

The director will receive the Jack Valenti Humanitarian Award at a private dinner following a day-long entertainment industry event, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The award presentation will be held in Washington in conjunction with the organisation’s 'The Business of Show Business' seminar on April 21.

The Jack Valenti Humanitarian Award, named after the well-known MPPA leader, is presented to people within the film industry "whose work exemplifies a dedication to humanity and community".

MPAA CEO and chairman Dan Glickman said that Scorsese "for decades has exemplified an extraordinary sense of community both on and off screen”.

Clint Eastwood was the first recipient of the award in 2007.
