The actor, who stars as John Connor in the Fox show, is reportedly being tapped to play Jesse, a jock on the swim team.
Producers of the film, a reboot of the 1984 original, have said that the story will follow the basic concept of its predecessor but will also borrow elements from the entire Elm Street franchise.
Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley has been cast as Freddy Krueger, while Smallville's Kyle Gallner will star as Quentin, a character thought to be similar to Johnny Depp's role in the original movie.
Transformers director Michael Bay will produce the Wesley Strick-penned movie alongside Platinum Dunes and New Line, with music video helmer Samuel Bayer taking directorial duties.
Production is scheduled to start later this year.
