The director revealed to Empire that he was worried the pair, who star as Holmes and his partner Watson in the Warner Bros movie, wouldn't get along.
"Robert and Jude didn't know each other before they both signed on," said Ritchie. "So, I was a little anxious when they first met - for about a second. Within ten minutes they were like old mates."
Ritchie hailed his two stars as "super-smart, super-experienced and super-talented", adding: "They worked really well together. It turned into a movie about their chemistry."
Sherlock Holmes will land in cinemas on December 26.
