Roger Donaldson has signed up to direct The Day They Stole The Mona Lisa.

The adaptation of Seymour Reit's 1981 novel will be produced by Phoenix Pictures and Robert Chartoff.

Reit's book centered on the true story of the theft of the world's most famous painting in 1911. The Mona Lisa went missing for two years before an Italian carpenter discovered the artwork in Florence.

The movie will focus on the conman behind the theft, Eduardo de Valfierno.

Donaldson's credits include The World's Fastest Indian and The Bank Job.
