The Star Trek director said that he enjoyed making the film from a "non-fan point of view", reports MTV News.
He said: "I was never really a fan of Star Trek. This is one of those things that I'm gonna get killed for saying, but I didn't really pay attention to the recent films - which I probably should have."
The Lost creator added: "I didn't know there had been 10 films."
Abrams did however contend that he and his cast still view the legacy of Star Trek as "sacred".
"Our goal was to honour and respect what ['Trek' fans] love so much, and yet, make our own statement."
Star Trek is released on Friday.
