The director admitted that he was forced to find funds for the movie after Universal Studios balked at the $80 million price tag, according to Total Film.
He said: "It came to the point where a company from Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I would have ever had for a movie."
However Rodriguez said that he was not willing to separate from his five children to film in Germany.
He also expressed his disappointment that his remake of the 1968 Jane Fonda sci-fi vehicle, which was to star Rose McGowan, will never see the light of day.
"It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy, near heavy metal-style version of a Star Wars movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great," he added.
Rodriguez will now reportedly focus on other projects such as Machete, and also plans to release Barbarella’s concept artwork in book form.
