The Rush Hour filmmaker reportedly departed the barbarian epic due to a scheduling clash.
"We're currently in the process of hiring a director," producer Joe Gatta told Empire. "For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn't work. But you never know what can happen."
Previous franchise instalments include Oliver Stone and John Milius's 1982 film Conan The Barbarian and 1984's Conan The Destroyer, both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Ratner is also working on a film about Milli Vanilli, Beverly Hills Cop IV for Paramount and comic adaptation Youngblood.
