The actor will portray a hitman in the remake of the 1972 film that starred the late Charles Bronson, according to Total Film.
The plotline will centre on an emotionally reserved assassin who trains the son of one of his victims. Statham previously played a contract killer in the Crank movies.
The Mechanic will be directed by Simon West, whose previous filmmaking credits include the remake of When A Stranger Calls.
Filming will begin this summer in Shreveport, Louisiana.
