Coraline director Henry Selick has said that Teri Hatcher found it 'difficult to be mean' when voicing the animated film.

Selick told DS that the Desperate Housewives star found some aspects of her stop-motion character more challenging than others.

"Teri's fantastic. She has a lot of range. The main thing with Teri was that it was difficult for her to be mean, because she has a great daughter and could never be that way to her own daughter," Selick explained.

The filmmaker, who has also directed The Nightmare Before Christmas and James And The Giant Peach, added that Hatcher eventually came to enjoy voicing her evil on-screen alter ego.

"She was ready to take charge of the Other Mother at her most wicked and most evil," he commented. "I think that was the most fun for her."

Coraline, about a young girl who steps through a door into an alternate version of her own home, is in cinemas now.
