Creator Johnny Ferraro and Scott Mednick have teamed up to oversee the big screen spinoff of the popular NBC programme, which pits amateur athletes against themselves and the show's own "gladiators" in strength, agility and endurance contests.
The show, which was initially conceived as a movie, will be turned into an action narrative taking place within the world Ferraro devised.
"I look forward to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters," Mednick said.
The American Gladiators format has been adapted in 14 countries, with the British version relaunched on Sky1 last year.
