The actor told DS that he learned an "immense amount" from working with Howard, whose character Harvey Boarden leads penniless Shawn MacArthur into the world of bare-knuckle boxing.
"There's a line in American literature, 'the only ones for me are the mad ones', and he's mad and I love it," Tatum said of Howard. "I think he puts it on a bit. He's so smart and I think that's his way of jesting at people."
The 29-year-old recalled Howard explaining to him how to break out of jail using his own urine: "He'll just go on and on about it. I'm like, 'I hope I'm your cellmate if I'm ever in prison'."
Discussing his role, Tatum added that he was able to draw on his own experiences, having moved to New York with little money to support himself.
"I've lived in my car in New York," he revealed. "I couldn't get anyone to call me back to go see an apartment. I lived for about three weeks in a car. I know what it’s like to have nothing."
Fighting is released in UK cinemas tomorrow.
