Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, a representative for the 85-year-old confirmed that he was still "not well enough" after being hospitalised in December following a fall at his Richmond-Upon-Thames home.
"It is immensely frustrating for him but I can't see him taking on any more roles in the foreseeable future," said the spokesperson.
"He has no other projects coming up and no plans to take on any. He's still in the rehabilitation centre as a inpatient but we hope he will be out soon, but we can't say when."
The filmmaker's brother Sir David added that he is unsure whether his sibling will ever return to the big screen, saying: "I have no idea whether he will be able to. He's getting on with his recovery, but he is still in hospital."
He had been scheduled to begin filming horror movie Ironclad this summer, alongside James Purefoy and Robert Carlyle.
