The Oscar-nominated actress will play the mother of Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg's characters. David O. Russell is directing the movie, which is inspired by the true story of Boston boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his journey to become the world lightweight champion aided by his half-brother Dicky Eklund (Bale).
Wahlberg told Digital Spy last November that he has been "training for two years" to prepare for The Fighter.
"It's more than a passion project," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine, a childhood fantasy to play a great champion."
Production is scheduled to begin on The Fighter this summer.
