Charlie Kaufman has said that he does not set out to please people when he writes his movies.

The screenwriter, who also directed his latest film Synecdoche, New York, told The Independent that he felt it was more important to be honest in his work.

Kaufman said: "When I'm writing I'm not interested in trying to figure out how to please people. I think that gets in the way.

"I think if you start thinking that way, you start making a product as opposed to something that's reflecting something honest about your experience in the world."

Of his new movie, he added: "I think it means whatever you want it to mean. And my feeling is that if you don't get it then it's not speaking to you and therefore my telling you what it means to me is pointless."

Last week, lead actor Philip Seymour Hoffman admitted to feeling confused when he first read the film's screenplay.
