According to MTV News, the director bypassed many storylines from the third film in the series, Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines, for the new flick, with the exception of John Connor marrying Kate Brewster.
It is understood that despite claims future sequels will rely heavily on the last movie's mention that Connor and Brewster's offspring will become important to the resistance fighting the machines, this will be used as a form of foreshadowing only.
"That's to be explored in the prospective second and third picture," McG said. "Now, I would never be so bold to presume that there will be another [Terminator sequel].
"But we've arced out a story that includes that child and its fate and what it becomes in this world of man versus machine."
McG has previously suggested that a possible fifth movie would be set in a pre-Judgement Day 2011.
Terminator Salvation is released in the US on May 21 and in the UK on June 3.
