Published Friday, May 22 2009, 10:48 BST | By Simon Reynolds

The character originated as a marketing idea for bubble gum in the 1950s. Wearing an unexplained eye-patch, Joe embarks on adventures with his friends Pesty, Mort, Toughie, Hungry Herman, Jane and a pet dog called Walkie Talkie.
Newcomer Mark Hammer will write the script for the big screen adaptation, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The Bazooka comic and gum brand is owned by the Topps trading card company, which Eisner acquired in 2007 for $380 million (£240 million).
