Published in 1991, Fry's debut novel centres on Adrian Healey, the titular liar who unreliably narrates the story and struggles to declare his love for Hugo Cartwright.
Skins actor Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Adrian, while Fry will play his uncle. Sir Ian McKellen is also among the cast.
First-time feature helmer Tony Hagger will produce and direct the movie based on Zak Shaikh's script. Filming will commence next year in the UK and Austria. BBC Films is in talks to partner on the project for funding and distribution.
Fry's recent movie credits include St. Trinians, Stormbreaker and V For Vendetta. He will also lend his vocal talents to the Cheshire Cat character in Tim Burton's forthcoming Alice In Wonderland adaptation.
