Moran: 'Meek wasn't like Spector'

Rex Features

Nick Moran has said that the late Joe Meek was not a British version of the recently-imprisoned US producer Phil Spector.

The director of new Meek biopic Telstar told Metro that there were key differences between the two music makers.

Moran said: "Phil Spector wandered around with his wigs and firearms, trying to be overtly - as a small Jewish guy - heterosexual, whereas Joe Meek, who is built like a farm hand and could rip your head off, is being fey and trying to behave like a ballet dancer.

"Maybe there is some connection. I mean, obviously you're sat in a dark room listening to funny noises all the time. It does drive you mad."

He added that the aim of his film was to tell the "human drama" of Meek's story rather than simply chronicle his "comic failures".
