Sacha Baron Cohen was threatened by gun-toting hunters while filming his new movie Bruno, it has emerged.

The comedian was on location in the US Deep South when the incident occurred, The Daily Mirror reports.

Cohen, who was portraying himself as the gay Austrian fashion designer, led a group of men to believe that he was a foreign correspondent carrying out a travel piece when things got out of hand.

A source said: "The hunters thought he was an Austrian TV presenter doing a travel piece. But his behaviour became outrageous. He said they were all like the Sex And The City girls and it went downhill from there."

The hunters apparently became enraged when the actor doffed his clothing and danced naked around the campsite.

"They immediately went for their guns and loaded them in front of the camera. He tried to calm them down but they were furious so they had to get out of there. Everyone was really shaken up by it all," the insider added.

Last month, Cohen was involved in staged incident involving rapper Eminem at the MTV Movie Awards.

Bruno will open in UK and US cinemas on July 10.
